About Artist "MADARA"
A Japanese Calligrapher Specializing in Hisseki-jutsu
Born May 6, 1972, in Fukushima, Japan. MADARA began SHODO (traditional Japanese calligraphy) at age five, training under a certified master and winning awards from childhood.
In 2000, he discovered HISSEKI-JUTSU — a uniquely Japanese art based on the idea that the way you write can attract good luck — and combined it with traditional calligraphy to create his own original style.
He is best known for MEIMEI-SHO: handwritten naming certificates believed to bring newborns good fortune. Over 18 years, he has created some 800,000 works, once receiving 400 orders in a single day.
Today, he creates name and word art at KANJI TOKYO in Hiratsuka, Japan, each piece carrying a wish for a brighter future.
Artist Statement
MADARAI don't write with a brush — I let it speak for the heart.
Every stroke carries love, longing, and hope. Like the heart itself, a line never runs straight — it trembles, leaps, bleeds. That wavering is what makes it alive.
Through HISSEKI-JUTSU, I work prayer and fortune into every piece — calligraphy meant to stir something quiet and powerful in those who see it.
Many colors mingling — uneven, mottled, alive. That is what "MADARA" means. That is who I am.
I pick up my brush, and I paint love.
